Dandara was caught off guard.

The Pickpocket Curse

I felt the need of creating a Brazilian curse from scratch. The idea came to me when I was writing the text. It's about a curse that represents a common fear here in the city of São Paulo, especially in the downtown area. The fear people have of those street children created that creature. Most of those children are not thieves, but it's still very possible to find one who can steal or assist in some kind of robbery on the streets. Even those people, who claim to be pro-life, feel some kind of disdain or repulsion towards the poor children who roam freely in the heart of São Paulo's capital. They dehumanize these children and avoid them at all costs instead of helping.

So, the design of this character was inspired by these children and the aversion many people feel towards them. Of course, there was also inspiration from the anime and manga themselves. In the original work, the eyes are symbolic and very important.

In the fanfic, this is a weak curse, level three or four. It barely appears and is quickly eliminated by Alex. But the scene, although short, is chilling. I imagined the creature emerging from a dark corner, opening one eye at a time, and these eyes moving in a disorderly manner. Its voice starts as a whisper and ends up trembling. It was a truly terrifying imagination that I needed to turn into art.

Dandara was constructed like a puzzle. I took some parts from other drawings I made of her and only changed the expression. Although she is in the foreground in this artwork, she is not the protagonist of the scene.

What did you think about the little monster I created? Did you enjoy the scene where it appeared? Share your thoughts in the comments.
