Jujutsu Kaisen Fanfic Cover chapter 6
Cover Art – Chapter 6
From the very beginning of this fanfic, I had envisioned this artwork. I wanted Dandara to go through this experience because the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuji Itadori, appears sleeping inside a moving train car that, in a strange and symbolic way, is slowly flooding. This scene represents his transformation, as he gradually drowns in the overwhelming changes happening in his life.
This same imagery was used again in the first part of the anime’s second season, this time with Satoru Gojo, the protagonist of the arc that explores his past. It’s an equally striking and symbolic moment: first, a single drop falls into the water; then, Gojo drifts into sleep, suggesting the weight of the changes about to unfold.
Inspired by this visual aesthetic and its deep meaning, I felt the urge to create an artwork for the fanfic that would be just as symbolic for Dandara as these scenes were for the protagonists of the original story.
Like Yuji, Dandara undergoes a transition that ultimately leads to the creation of the Jujutsu school in Brazil. She has always faced struggles for choosing to deal with curses, but beyond that, her journey carries additional burdens due to her culture, gender, and skin color. The suffocating sensation that follows her is not just a supernatural affliction—it reflects very real issues faced by women living in São Paulo, such as social inequality, prejudice, religion, and class struggles.
The subway is a symbol of movement and transition, but the Liberdade district was a deliberate and special choice for this scene, as it holds significance for both Dandara and Satoru Gojo. Let me tell you a little more about it.
Next Stop: Liberdade–Africa–Japan
The Liberdade district is one of São Paulo’s most historically significant neighborhoods, and it was chosen as the setting for Dandara Majo’s interrogation by none other than Satoru Gojo. This mysterious location plays a crucial role in the protagonist’s origins—even though she has yet to realize it.
Until recently, Liberdade was primarily associated with Japanese immigration. In 2018, the word Japan was officially added to its name, recognizing the area’s strong Japanese influence. However, in 2023, the district’s history was once again revisited, and its name was changed to Liberdade–Africa–Japan, acknowledging its deep, often overlooked Black heritage.
For centuries, Liberdade carried a much darker past. What is now Liberdade Square was once known as Largo da Forca, the execution site for enslaved people and other condemned individuals. Additionally, the Capela dos Aflitos (Chapel of the Afflicted), hidden in a narrow alley suffocated by modern buildings, is one of the last remaining fragments of this forgotten history. Built in 1779, the chapel was part of the old Cemitério dos Aflitos (Cemetery of the Afflicted), where enslaved Africans, Indigenous people, and executed criminals were buried. Among them was Francisco José das Chagas, known as Chaguinhas, a soldier who led a mutiny for fair wages. His execution failed three times—the noose snapped each time—causing an uproar among the people and turning him into a martyr of the Black resistance.
Over time, the history of the neighborhood was gentrified and erased, but its significance persists. The site of the Cemetery of the Hanged, where Black, poor, and Indigenous bodies were once laid to rest, was buried beneath urban expansion. Yet, the Capela dos Aflitos still stands, a silent witness to a history that refuses to be forgotten.
Dandara’s Connection to Liberdade
For Dandara, Liberdade is more than just a setting—it is a bridge to her ancestry and the forces that have shaped her life. As a mixed-race woman, the history of this neighborhood and its past directly impact her journey. She carries the weight of a legacy that continues to echo in the present.
That is why this location was chosen for the cover art of Chapter 6. Liberdade is both a portal to Dandara’s destiny and a reminder of the struggles her lineage has endured. Just as Yuji and Gojo found themselves submerged in symbolic waters in Jujutsu Kaisen, Dandara, too, finds herself drowning in an ocean of meaning—suffocated by challenges that go far beyond the supernatural.
